Mission Statement:
To prepare individuals with and without developmental disabilities for life success within their family and community. Our vision is that every student we serve will achieve a full and productive life.
Description of Program:
Crossroads Center for Children provides education and therapy to children agedĀ 2 - 12years old. Crossroads is an applied behavior analysis (ABA) school which was founded in 1998 to serve a group of 5 young children with diagnoses of autism whose school districts did not have appropriate programs for. From gaining NYS Education Department approval to open a single classroom for those five children, to growing to meet the needs of our community, Crossroads has always been reputable as a leader and exemplar of excellence in child-care and education for students with special developmental learning needs.
The majority of students here are members of the fastest growing group of individuals with disabilities. Autism, now affecting 1 in 36 children, is increasing like rapid-fire. While awareness around this population increases, still our children are vastly underserved in terms of actual and direct help. The ABA programming that we give them makes a real and actual difference in their skills and abilities, helping them to achieve greater independence. Many of our children are non-verbal when they come to us. Many have intensely maladaptive behaviors. Almost all have very splintered academic and functional skills. Using methods of ABA, we are able to teach our students skills which are critical for their growth and development, in school, at home, and in life. Many families tell us that Crossroads is where their child showed his or her first steps of progress, and where they found their first sense of hope.
We also now have students with varying special needs in addition to autism. As well, many with general education needs help us facilitate a wonderful integrated preschool model.
