Design Tech High School (d.tech) was founded as a new model of public education, offering students an alternative to the more traditional learning methods of existing San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) high schools. Established in 2014 as a charter school by SMUHSD and in 2018 finding its permanent home on Oracle’s campus, d.tech’s origins were inspired by the ideals and innovations of its Silicon Valley location from day one, with a vision to redesign the high school experience for life.
As a four-year public high school with about 550 students, Design Tech High School's mission is to develop people who believe that the world can be a better place and that they can be a part of making it happen. Its interdisciplinary curriculum integrates design thinking, project-based learning and technology to encourage creativity, problem-solving and collaboration among its students just as one might find in Silicon Valley. In short, d.tech exists to teach students the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to contribute to the common good, and discover their creative purpose beyond the classroom.
