The Dolores Huerta Elementary PTA Mission:  To cultivate an active, collaborative, diverse community of parents and teachers to create equity in education, engage and share information in a Spanish-dominant bilingual format, improve the wellbeing of every family, and realize every student’s highest potential through academic rigor and social justice.

Who we serve and how:  Located in San Francisco, our school serves a diverse student body of about 400 children in pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Almost 75 percent of our students identify as Latinx and 60 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Forty-five percent of our students are English Learners. We offer a unique Spanish-Immersion curriculum as well as an award-winning program for students with learning and developmental disabilities. We support our students to meet high academic standards in an environment that celebrates bilingualism, social justice, and diversity.

Role of the PTA:  We help support the school, in part by raising critical funds to support academic and enrichment programs for our students that are not fully funded by the school district. These include:

  • Arts enrichment programs that bring visual and performing artists to teach our students
  • Recess Coordinator, SF Recreation and Park
  • Professional development for our teachers and staff
  • Hands-on outdoor science instruction
  • Field trips to Museums, Cultural Centers, Mission Science, and many more
  • Community events that bring families together and empower our bilingual community
  • Supplies for our library and Maker’s Space
  • Hardware and software to better use technology in support of our students’ academic learning
  • Beautification of our aging campus, such as greening our space and new facilities (play structure and turf field)
  • Organizing direct assistance to help our community respond to COVID-19
