Dragonfly Centre is a sexual assault centre and charitable organization (Charity Registration # 81685 0986 RR0001) incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act, and under the direction of a community-based Board of Directors. We are the sole sexual assault centre in North Central East Alberta with a main office in Bonnyville and satellite offices in Athabasca, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche and St. Paul.
As one of the 15 sexual assault centres in Alberta, we have the largest service area serving a population of over 109,000 people spanning over 65,000 km2 with 1 city, 9 towns, 40+ villages and hamlets, 4 Métis settlements, and 10 First Nations... We are the only sexual violence service provider in the North Central East region.
By providing specialized intervention, preventative education and counselling to children, youth, adults, families, and communities in North Central East Alberta, it is our mission to one-day end the cycle of sexual abuse and assault. We have increased awareness that sexual violence is wrong, proven not only through Alberta wide sexual violence prevalence rates (nearly one in two Albertans have experienced sexual violence), but in our own reporting as well. When we started in 2015 we had 71 sexual violence clients, last year we reported having over 2,100 clients. Silence is being broken surrounding sexual violence and victims of sexual abuse and assault are becoming more and more brave and are ready to access our services to start healing
Currently, over half of our 2,100 clients are children and youth. We are receiving an average of 1 referral per week of a child or youth who has been sexual abused. These referrals are coming from Victims Services, schools and crisis support workers among other professional agencies throughout our expansive service area.
