El Centro del Barrio dba CentroMed has served San Antonio and its surrounding areas since 1973 and developed its women’s health department in 1989. For 50 years, CentroMed has provided quality, affordable health care services to vulnerable communities in Bexar County. CentroMed is governed by a 15-member consumer-majority Board of Directors, who have
established goals and objectives, as well as monitor and evaluate the organization’s performance. In addition, CentroMed currently serves special populations such as individuals experiencing homelessness as well as people living with HIV/AIDS (Ryan White). CentroMed currently employs approximately 996 employees, of which 115 are providers. CentroMed’s services
include family practice, internal medicine, rheumatology, pediatrics, OB/GYN, podiatry, preventive care, chronic disease management, acute care, and after-hour coverage. In addition, CentroMed’s dental care includes preventive, restorative, rehabilitative, acute, and emergent care dental services. Behavioral services offered by CentroMed include individual and family counseling. Ancillary services include laboratory, Pharmacy (Class A and Class D), Optometry, Eligibility and Outreach services, health education, fitness programing, WIC services, and care coordination services. Currently, CentroMed’s operations consist of 32 sites. CentroMed is an integrated primary care clinic that provides accessible services of superior quality. No patient is turned away for an inability to pay.
