The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) creates opportunities for diverse children and youth. Our motto is - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM. EIS programs are founded on the core belief that hands-on STEM learning, enrichment activities, and role models, provide a strong foundation for students who are otherwise lacking these opportunities. EIS helps students see their own potential as capable scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Our programs inspire students to continue in their STEM education and to carry on to career training or college.
EIS also welcomes children and youth from throughout San Diego to promote a diverse learning
environment. While we provide in-depth STEM content, the true essence of what we do is to instill and nurture in our students what many call a “STEM Identity,” a self-perception that the person is capable of engaging in science and technology. Having a STEM identity is a prerequisite to having a STEM career.
Because most of our students are people of color, we are helping to generate interest in science among those who are least represented in the STEM workforce and increase diversity in STEM professions, a critical need in San Diego’s growing STEM-based economy.
