The Elysian Fire Department, located in Elysian, MN, provides fire protection and emergency response services to the Elysian community. The Fire Department's mission is to prevent the loss of life and property. In addition to responding to fires, the Elysian Fire Department also responds to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, rescue calls, and incidents involving hazardous materials. Our fire district encompasses approximately 28 square miles of lakes, highways, farms, and hunting properties.
Because we are a very small community, our tax base is not able to adequately fund the expense that keeps our equipment and fire fighters up to date. Many of our fire fighters are EMTs as well and need continuing education to maintain their certificates. Donations are used to purchase/replace gear for our brave first responders, maintain our equipment, and keep emergency medical supplies up to date and on hand.
At this time, our department is in need of a new/updated light rescue truck. This is the truck that is used for assistance at car crashes. It houses our extrication tools, winch, and spare medical equipment that does not fit in the primary medical truck. It is our secondary rescue truck and is outfitted for times that we have two calls at the same time, has additional supplies in case our primary truck runs out, etc. It is driven to all emergency calls.
During the summers, our population is almost tripled by the number of lake homes, campers, and rentals that are here to enjoy our 15 lakes in our district. While we all love our little piece of heaven during the summers, we also have increased numbers of emergencies due to the increased number of people in our area.
