Family Counseling Service has a mission to strengthen children, individuals, and families by providing professional therapy, education, advocacy, and other support. We challenge systemic barriers that would prevent our community from seeking and receiving mental healthcare.
Family Counseling Service's prioritizes equitable access to mental healthcare for our community. We serve a large area including: Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, & San Patricio counties. For many communities in the Coastal Bend, access to necessities is compromised by systemic barriers. These barriers significantly impact one's mental and physical health. In the Coastal Bend 27% of our community lives below the poverty line (Including 42% of our children). That is almost double the average in Texas and 3 times more than the US.
Deeply rooted in the issues facing our community, we recognize the need for professional mental healthcare and the impact it will have on children, families, and individuals. Professional counseling is not available to everyone, and we are addressing multiple barriers to mental health in the Coastal Bend.
Non-medical factors that influence health outcomes are both symptoms and consequences of mental health issues. Family Counseling Service provides comprehensive mental healthcare that includes addressing issues that clients may not recognize as an impact on their mental health. By treating mental health symptoms as well as social determinants of health, Family Counseling Service impacts individuals and families in a manner that has the potential to improve the community as generational patterns of dysfunction are broken. We offer sliding fee scale options to the uninsured and copay assistance. Many people with Medicaid or CHIP coverage have trouble finding local providers; as a response, each of Family Counseling Service's fully licensed therapists provide various Medicaid and CHIP programs to address this barrier. Family Counseling Service processes about 100 new clients each month and many of these new clients are seeking services for their entire family.
