For more than 16+ years, Fred’s Footsteps has provided financial assistance to hard-working families in the Philadelphia region (19 counties) who find themselves in a crisis due to the costs associated with caring for a seriously ill, injured or disabled child. Our families were otherwise financially stable until faced with the astronomical out-of-pocket costs associated with caring for a sick child. In 2021, we supported 103 families, the most families in one year to date. The recent pandemic has compounded these issues.

While the organization recognizes that there are no quick fixes, and many families need continued support as they go through the ups and downs of their child’s illness. Fred’s Footsteps provides a bridge, not just momentary help, and  is structured to follow families for a period of one year. The organization also acts as an advocate for the families, linking them to other organizations that may be able to provide assistance.

Fred’s Footsteps does not limit its funding to certain illnesses and understands that there are thousands of rare diseases that have little or no funding from other organizations. We support families whose children have been in house fires, car accidents, born prematurely or have experienced other traumatic episodes.

When a child is sick, it affects the whole family. Fred’s Footsteps looks to improve the quality of life for the parents and siblings as well. We understand that no two families are alike; each has specific needs based on complex factors. Working with the family, we identify where we can make the greatest impact. We have assisted families with:

  • Mortgage and rent payments
  • Utility payments
  • Cell phone bills
  • Groceries and other household items
  • Appliances
  • Car/Van payments or purchases
  • Home or vehicle modifications to accommodate the sick child
  • Respite care
  • Funeral expenses
