Our children are going to school in a new age of education, infused with 21stCentury Learning and the premise that all students leave their educational journey college and career ready. The standards and expectations that our students master and acquire are under going a metamorphosis known as the Common Core.
Huskies are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful.
With a new instructional focus also comes a new way to measure student mastery of these standards. Long gone are the days of standardized testing where students sat down with paper and pencil to complete an assessment that measured their learning. The new standardized assessment, known as the SBAC, is an online assessment that requires higher-level thinking and a set of technology skills where students must be able to navigate a multi-media world as they take their test.
With an ever increased need to prepare our students for this new age of education and a new testing platform. Friends of Hopkinson (FOH) and I have been working together to put essential components needed for success together for Hopkinson. I am excited to share that next year, through funding from FOH, Hopkinson will have a credentialed media center teach in the computer lab. I am thrilled for our students and staff to have a teacher dedicated to preparing our students for the demands of this new era.
The next step, for our school is to modernize our computer lab, which currently consists of old, refurbished PCs that aren’t adequate to lead our Huskies down this new path. Many families at the Hukilau donated during the paddle raise at Hopkinson to support a new iMac lab at Hopkinson. All Hopkinson families now have the opportunity to join these donors in donating today.
