In western Kenya, because of poverty and cultural expectations, girls seldom get a high school or college education.  A group of Kansas teachers and other professionals, after meeting a visiting clergyman from Kenya, founded Friends of St. Anne’s Girls’ School (FOSA) to help build a library for the school he was starting with one teacher and 20 young women who wanted to learn.

FOSA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, has grown to support equal and better education in Kapkemich, a small community in western Kenya.  In the past fourteen years, our organization has worked with dedicated people on-site to increase attendance from 20 to over 200 girls. We have provided funds for that library, stocked it with books, added solar panels, built a dormitory and science and computer labs.

Currently we provide about half of the students with full or partial financial assistance so they may complete their secondary education.  We have also begun funding some post-secondary scholarships, to increase the numbers of teachers and nurses and other professionals, giving young people an opportunity to become self-sufficient contributors to their communities. We are proud of the 40 post-secondary scholarship recipients who have graduated to-date.  Some board members have even started a sister organization that built and staffed a clinic, and telemedicine services are provided from right here in Kansas. We brought a nurse here to the metro area to earn her masters in public health at UMKC.  She just returned to Kenya and we are excited to see the progress that results!

Sources for funding these endeavors include grants, donations, and our annual Celebration of Thanks Gala, which will be held at the Carriage Club on State Line Road. The gala will celebrate the gifts of our donors as well as accomplishments and improvements at St. Anne’s over the past year. Attendees enjoy a celebration with food and drink, and entertaining opportunities to continue their support via live and silent auctions, a raffle, and opportunities to sponsor a specific young woman by paying her school fees.

Your gift would promote your organization as well as help make this gala truly special.  We will gladly recognize your business on our web page and at the gala, highlighting your generosity.

Your consideration is very much appreciated.
