Friends of Baldwin is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-led organization that works to strengthen the Maria L. Baldwin School community and support the educational experience of our students. The Baldwin School, a public and socioeconomically diverse PK-5 school, serves 352 students from all neighborhoods in Cambridge. Throughout the school year, teachers request funds from Friends of Baldwin to add depth and richness to the standard curriculum. For example, in the past, our creative faculty has used funds we've raised to develop an all-school "STEM Day"; to purchase a 3-D printer to be used by students; for field trips to such places as Nature's Classroom in Charlton, MA, where kids can "think outside the books"; for all-school author visits from the likes of Jason Chin, Karina Yan Glasser, and Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow; and to offset the cost of student overnight camping trips by the coast or in the woods. These trips have been an annual highlight for the children. For many students, it’s the first time they’ve been to the ocean or explored the forest. Approximately 33% of Baldwin students are students with disabilities or they speak English as a second language, or they're eligible to receive free or subsidized lunch. A big part of our mission is to ensure that every child can take part regardless of their family's economic situation.
