In 2000, Dr. Vien D. Doan brought four volunteers to Vietnam to provide free medical care to the underserved people of Vietnam. The team has since expanded to include dental, optometric and surgical care over the years. In 2004, GSMDM began taking steps to develop an Emergency Medicine (EM) specialty in Vietnam. In 2010, GSMDM held the first Emergency Medicine Symposium in Vietnam, led by various EM specialists from around the world. In 2013, we developed the Primary Care Physician Training program, selecting two local physicians from each district in Cao Bằng to train with GSMDM so that they could care for their own patients. Our vision has extended in recent years to go beyond the medical and dental field to provide more comprehensive aid to the people of Cao Bằng, including the building of multiple preschools for the children, and helping them update their curriculum.
