Since 1925, the Hastings Symphony Orchestra (HSO) has performed a minimum of two concerts a year - to audiences who might otherwise never hear live symphonic music - which makes it one of the longest-running non-professional orchestras in the country. In the process, the HSO has provided playing opportunities to hundreds of local and regional amateur and semi-professional musicians. For 97 seasons the HSO has culturally enriched Hastings and south central Nebraska by providing quality, live music and music education for people of all ages and backgrounds. The Hastings Symphony Orchestra is a Nebraska nonprofit corporation and an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

One of the HSO’s most unique qualities is the orchestra itself. Unlike other orchestras that usually silo musicians by proficiency, the HSO is made up of classically-trained musicians that include students, amateurs, and professionals, which provides unique learning and mentorship opportunities to every participant.

Music education has always been one of the HSO’s top priorities. In addition to providing playing opportunities to student musicians, every season we perform at public schools for free. The HSO conductor and musicians visit local and regional schools to expose children to classical music and the instruments and musicians that make it, hoping to inspire them to play music and to become lifelong music lovers. To continue this inspiration, child and student concert tickets are always free.
