The WSMPA is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that provides financial support for music programs in West Springfield Public Schools. The WSMPA is administered by parents and guardians of students who participate in elementary, middle and high school band and high school choir.
Many expenses associated with running a successful music program are not funded by school budgets. Instead, they are paid for with funds raised by booster organizations like the WSMPA. These expenses include uniform upkeep/purchase, instrument repair/replacement, sheet music purchases, music camps, competition fees and halftime field show choreography. Incidentally, the WSHS Marching Terriers is one of only three high school bands in Western Massachusetts that still performs a halftime field show during home football games.
The WSMPA also provides funding for band and choir participation in local, regional and state competitions and national competitions that require out-of-state travel and hotel accommodations. The cost to send one band or choir student on an overnight field trip is approximately $1000. Through various fundraising efforts, the WSMPA has reduced the amount our students must pay by half. For students with financial hardships, the amount is reduced further.
