As the oldest and largest non-profit hospice provider in the greater New Braunfels area, Hope Hospice has a long history of providing compassionate care not only at the end of life, but caring for those left behind. Our grief support services are provided by LPCs with specific training and experience in grief support; we are the only organization in Comal County and other counties positioned as such. Hope Hospice is locally & nationally recognized as being "best hospice," "top workplace," & as having higher than national average scores in post-service surveys. Grief counseling is provided in four primary programs: pre-bereavement, hospice bereavement, community grief & children's grief. Each program offers multiple methods, modes & intervention styles suited to best support & engage those in need. Our hospice clinical teams are comprised of a hospice physician, team of registered nurses, master’s level social worker, spiritual care counselor, certified nurse’s aides & volunteers. We don’t turn anyone who qualifies for service away, regardless of their ability to pay. We believe that no one should die alone & that all who need end of life care should receive it. We also meet patients and their families where they are, literally & figuratively, serving patients wherever they live -in a home, a hospital, a nursing facility or even in tents along the river- & where they are spiritual, with the majority of our spiritual care counselors holding M.Div or being pastors previously.

Our program seeks to strengthen families by providing an environment for children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers to focus on their grief and to better understand the grieving process. According to the Arizona State University Family Bereavement Program, one of the most powerful resources for helping children adjust after a death of a loved one is the quality of the parenting by the surviving caregivers, who themselves are most likely grieving. For this reason, we include parents and caregivers in our counseling offerings, including our Family Night support groups, Camp HavenHeart Families and parent consult visits, which accompany counseling sessions for children. All of our counseling is provided by Licensed Professional Counselors specifically trained in grief support and in children's grief counseling.

Our community grief and children's grief programs are expected to be called upon in greater demand to support adults and children impacted by losses in our service area exacerbated by COVID-19 and increased suicides in this project year and in the future.
