Shelter: Our Animal Shelter strives to find homes for homeless cats and dogs of all ages. In addition, our shelter team works with families who may need to surrender their pets or we will guide them to resources that will help them keep their pets. We believe in the preservation of families and what we do helps accomplish that goal. We ensure that shelter pets receive proper nourishment, exercise, and enrichment activities during their time with us. Our goals and impact on the community extend beyond our shelter doors. Our generous and caring foster families are ready to help care for abandoned and homeless litters of puppies and kittens with their moms when the need arises. In the event of an emergency, we offer crisis fostering to pet owners and will return their pet when they are ready to be welcomed home. We are grateful for our local animal agencies and rescues, and for the opportunity to combine our efforts to help provide spay/neuter, vaccinations, and micro-chipping for adopted pets. Our shelter also works with the public and local government agencies to help control community and feral cat populations with spay/neuter and vaccination services. The Pet Food and Supply Pantry exists to assist families with pets that experience challenging times to ensure their pet receives nourishment and enrichment. The community donates various cat/dog food, toys, and other supplies that are distributed to families that are in need and are also provided with each adoption. Helping the community with ensuring they can continue to provide for their pet reduces the probability that they will surrender or abandon their pet. Clinic: Our clinic offers discounted services to those who qualify in the city of Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago to help support pet-owners in their efforts to keep their pets healthy. Through those services, we provide low-cost spay/neutering and vaccinations. Wildlife Rehabilitation Center: Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center admits injured or orphaned wild animals native to Indiana and cares for them until they are ready to be returned to their natural habitat. The Center receives wildlife as small as hummingbirds and chipmunks to animals as large as coyotes and foxes. Other species admitted are in need of various levels of rehab assistance, such as opossums and eagles. Education Center: Our Education Center, which opened in 2016, provides learning opportunities for all ages at our facility located in Valparaiso, IN. We offer informational seminars regarding wildlife at our Valparaiso location as well as domestic pet talks at our shelter in Munster. Camps for school-aged children can be found at both locations throughout the year. In addition to these seminars, our wildlife team travels throughout the state to provide wildlife education programs at schools and public events. These education programs are conducted by trained staff and also include our live wildlife ambassadors, animals that were admitted to the rehabilitation center for treatment but could not be released back to the wild due to their injuries.
