The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation promotes children's safety, well-being, and hope for their future by providing healing services and education to end the cycle of violence and save lives.

Safe At Home was created in 2002 by baseball legend Joe Torre and his wife, Ali, as a result of the impact that domestic violence had on Torre growing up as a child. As he grew older and came to terms with his experience, he wanted to ensure that no child grew up as he did – feeling alone and afraid. The mission of Safe At Home is to address the nationwide crisis of violence: 60% of American children have experienced violence in their homes, schools, and communities. Without early intervention, the resulting trauma can cause devastating long-term effects.

Our efforts are focused on helping children who are victims and witnesses of violence and abuse as they navigate a difficult path to healing. This work is especially important in underserved communities, where resources are scarce, sources of violence and/or abuse are higher, and compounding factors of trauma – such as homelessness and poverty – are widespread.

Our organization works to promote healthy relationships, prevent abuse, and mitigate the negative impacts of violence and trauma – this includes contributing to the reduction of violence perpetration later in life. Our core program is a “safe room” within public schools, named Margaret’s Place after Joe Torre’s mother. These programs are staffed by a full-time, master’s-level therapist who provides individual counseling, group sessions, peer leadership, schoolwide anti-violence campaigns, and educational workshops for school employees and parents.

Our expert staff help children to strengthen resilience, let them know that they are not alone, and underscore that the violence is not their fault– all while providing a safe place in the school. Safe At Home’s layered approach also raises youth consciousness about violence and its effects on individuals and communities, and to empower youth to help them find their voice. With your help, our goal is to provide these young people with the support they need to live a life free of violence.

Our programs are currently in the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, and Cincinnati, reaching over 16,000 children and teens every year and more than 140,000 since our founding.
