vThe John Howard Association (JHA) independently monitors correctional facilities, policies and practices, and advances reforms needed to achieve a fair, humane, and effective criminal justice system. We are Illinois' only independent, nonprofit citizen corrections monitor. We go into every Illinois prison (adult and juvenile) to observe conditions, the treatment of prisoners, and healthcare, speak to incarcerated people and prison staff, and document the realities experienced by prisoners inside facilities. We share our findings and provide recommendations, and advocate for meaningful change that promotes and protects the health, safety, fair treatment, and rehabilitation of those who are incarcerated.
