Who are we?

The John Howard Society of Ontario is a not-for-profit organization of 19 local offices dedicated to effective, just, and humane responses to crime and its causes. We obtained registered charitable status in 1967 and have been working to keep humanity in justice ever since. In neighbourhoods and schools throughout the region, we offer programs for youth and adults that are proven to reduce crime and build protective factors in people’s lives. Our programs help people develop life, relationship, and coping skills, and are offered to residents of all ages, regardless of whether they have been involved in the justice system.

Last year at JHSYR, we supported an estimated 5000 new individuals through our 15 different programs and services. Our communities are reflected by the way we respond to crime. So, our response must be effective. When the system is effective, it costs us less and provides us more. As an organization, we aim to help our community grow more resilient, therefore building a safer York Region.

I’m the Youth Services Manager at JHSYR. I oversee 7 different youth focussed programs designed to strengthen and support youth from ages 6+ with things such as counselling support, access to basic needs, housing support and learning how to build healthy relationships. Two of our programs are part of an agreement with York Region District School Board and we support public and secondary schools in the region by providing cost-free programming. In my position, I work to write grants for federal and municipal funding, grow and develop programs for York Region youth and manage a team of 13 individuals.

John Howard Society of Ontario and its’ branches focus on creating safer communities by fostering more effective, just, and humane responses to crime and its causes. Our 19 offices deliver programs and services that build upon key life skills, support individuals and families, and allow for those barriered to achieve a more productive future. We believe our values align, as we share the two primary values of Diversity and Respect. These values help build safer and more connected communities.

Our 19 offices across Ontario are meeting for our bi-annual provincial conference where we hope to celebrate our theme of “Stronger Together”. We seek to recognize the incredible efforts and passionate work our branches participate in their communities across Ontario daily.  We will examine how we as service providers can adapt, learn, and grow through dynamic workshops and industry relevant presenters on various topics including housing and food insecurities, hate crime prevention and youth/youth-at-risk of justice involvement.

As part of the conference, we will also be giving out thank you gifts and small door prizes, and we were wondering if you would be willing to support us with a donation. If you would like further information or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
