The Juan Garcia Farmworker Scholarship (JGFS) is a nonprofit organization (501( c)(3)) that provides scholarships to children from farm-working families who are pursuing higher education. We currently serve three high schools (Madera HS, Reedley HS, and Orange Cove HS) in the Central Valley, all agriculture communities where the majority of residents are poor farmworkers. In 2009, JGFS began awarding financial scholarships and in 2013, we became a nonprofit organization. Every year since then we continue to grow. Our goal for this year is to begin to provide continuing scholarships for former scholarship recipients. We are proud to say that 100% of all donations go towards scholarships, and our organization is run by a cadre of volunteers only. JGFS former scholarship recipients are now volunteering in different capacities, i.e. fundraising in their communities, at annual community outreach events, with media, Facebook, and Instagram, and one recipient is now a board member. Our organization is impacting not only scholarship recipients but also farm-working communities at large.
