Recently Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful was giving a presentation to High School students regarding recycling.  This presentation focuses on how to recycle correctly, but also discuss the importance of recycling, how recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions, extends the life of our landfills, uses less natural resources then creating new materials, how a commitment to recycling reduces litter, and how unrecycled plastics are a major contributing factor to the microplastics that we are all now drinking, eating, and breathing in daily.

After the presentation, a student slowly raised his hand to ask a question.  His question, “are we all doomed?”

This is not the first time that a question like this has come up, and they tend to come from our younger generations.  The general consensus from our youth is that we (adults) are not protecting and caring for our environment as we should, to ensure our youth have a healthy planet in which to grow up in.  Our answer though is that, “We are optimistic”.  As a society we are beginning to understand the consequences of the monumental amount of trash that is being produced.  Knowing there is a problem is the first step, and we are seeing society make progress through working together to create positive change and solutions.

The vision of Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful is to be the driving force in the Toledo and Lucas County area in creating this positive change towards a sustainable future.  Our primary initiatives include improving recycling habits, reducing recycling contamination, low waste events, single use plastic reduction, litter reduction and cleanups, community beautification, composting, and general environmental education.
