At Know Polyhydramnios, we aim to advance the standard of care for pregnancies complicated by Polyhydramnios, to promote the developmental potential of infants whose gestations were complicated by Polyhydramnios through earlier intervention and proper testing, and to understand the causes, effects, and long-term outcomes of Polyhydramnios.

Polyhydramnios, too much amniotic fluid during pregnancy, is a complication affecting roughly 2 million women each year, that can result in serious adverse pregnancy outcomes such as placental abruption, preterm labor, and pulmonary or amniotic fluid embolism. In more than half of those pregnancies, the infants are diagnosed with some kind of genetic anomaly that requires specialized care before their first birthdays.

Unfortunately, in the medical community, Polyhydramnios is viewed only as a minor pregnancy complication, most often caused by gestational diabetes (outdated research from the 1970s that has been proven wrong), which has no bearing on the infant's life after delivery. Because of this poor view of Polyhydramnios, women are suffering, both physically and mentally, and infants are going far too long without the help they need.

Research has shown that while Polyhydramnios is technically a pregnancy condition, its presence should be considered the first obvious sign that the infant may have a genetic anomaly requiring specialized attention. Right now, this correlation is missing in the world of pediatrics. Our goal is to bridge that gap. We are currently moving toward that goal by providing updated research projects along with continued advocacy about Polyhydramnios that will ultimately advance the standard of care, closing the gap, and providing access to proper testing for infants with early intervention therapies designed to help them thrive.
