Mission Statement: Knowing You Matter exists for the purpose of showing You... the one considering, the one who's survived, and the family and friends of the lost... Matter, through community outreach and support. Darrel and Cindy Kullman founded Knowing You Matter shortly after their son Mikey died by suicide in January 2019. From this tragedy, they were inspired to make a difference to those affected by suicide by sharing their personal experience. Knowing You Matter programs continue Mikey’s legacy of love by ensuring people know that they matter and whatever they are struggling with in life, there is help. One of the biggest ways Knowing You Matter serves those in need is through community outreach events such as conferences, mental health resource fairs, suicide prevention training, and other speaking engagements. We have multiple partnerships with local mental health organizations and school districts in Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County. It is our vision to expand services for mental health to fill the gaps in our local communities and to reach those far beyond. Knowing You Matter provides Grief and Trauma Process Groups at no cost to suicide loss survivors to help them work through their grief and trauma. Knowing You Matter also provides Hope Bags filled with thoughtful, self-care items and information about local resources that are available to those in need. These Hope Bags are for those affected by suicide ideation, who have survived an attempt, and those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Hope Bags are distributed to individuals or through school counselors for students. Knowing You Matter began by telling the founder's own personal story, and we continue to share through storytelling videos of individuals affected by suicide to break the stigma surrounding this topic. Storytelling videos are shared on our website, at suicide prevention conferences, on our YouTube channel and social media. Knowing You Matter has brought public awareness for life changing and educational programs to prevent suicide. Since Knowing You matter began in 2020, thousands of people have been impacted through our programs. The focus of all these programs is to convey the messages “You Matter” and “You Are Not Alone.”
