Last Hope is an entirely volunteer run and operated local animal rescue that is funded completely by donations, grants, and (relatively small) adoption fees which are put right back into the care and welfare of the animals. Last Hope has existed since 1981 and has been local to Wantagh for well over a decade. We thoroughly vet all of our animals and make sure they get whatever they may need. This requires a near constant need to fundraise. We adopt out over 300 dogs and 500 cats each year into wonderful, loving homes on Long Island and surrounding areas. Many of our animals are rescued locally and many come from overcrowded, underfunded southern shelters where animals are added to the euthanasia list daily. We frequently take heartworm positive dogs and those in need of surgical or other expensive medical care knowing that they are unlikely to receive it otherwise. We also have a robust trap/neuter/release (“TNR”) program for feral cats and help out in the community in other ways such as with low cost vaccine clinics and providing help when we can with supplies and medical care.
