The Long Beach Ronald McDonald House provides a valuable community service to families facing the most difficult of life’s challenges; the illness of a child. By providing a "home away from home", the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House fills a critical healthcare gap for families of children with life-threatening conditions. Over the past two decades, advances in medical care have dramatically improved survival rates for childhood illnesses, but it is still difficult for many families to access such life-saving treatment options. Some travel hundreds of miles to reach world-class pediatric hospitals like Miller Children’s in Long Beach, and it is not uncommon for one or both parents to quit their jobs so they can manage their child’s medical needs. This effort places an enormous strain — emotional and financial — on the parents and siblings of these young patients while they attempt to cope with a terrifying diagnosis and perform the day-to-day tasks of normal family life.
Ronald McDonald House not only provides a place for families to stay, it also gives them a support network with other families facing similar circumstances. Our 23 guestroom House offers a living room, open-air courtyard, large dining room and kitchen. It also allows families the conveniences of a laundry facility, fully equipped computer room, outdoor garden and child’s play area. Many families travel long distances to get the best care possible for their children, and often times this divides a family. Our hope is, staying with us will provide rest, comfort and support and allow families to stay together in a warm, caring environment within close proximity to specialized medical care.
