In September 2019, my son, Tyler Lambert, died by suicide. He was 18 years old. Tyler was a son, brother, grandson, great grandson, nephew, and friend. Prior to his death, Tyler was
enrolled in his second year at St. Lawrence College in the Community Justice and Services
program. It was his goal to gain employment in Corrections or Policing.

Research shows that mental illness is the most important risk factor for suicide. In those aged 15-34, suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadians, preceded only by accidents (unintentional injuries).

The tragic circumstances of Tyler’s death have motivated his family and friends to raise funds and awareness concerning mental health and suicide, while honoring Tyler’s memory. On July 8-10, 2022, the third annual Tyler Lambert Memorial 3 Pitch Tournament is scheduled at the Willie Pratt diamonds in Amherstview. Further information regarding this established fundraiser can be viewed on our Facebook group page “We Play For Tyler”

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Maltby Centre (www.maltbycentre.ca,
https://www.facebook.com/MaltbyCentre). Maltby Centre is a local charity and not-for-profit
organization that provides free access to evidence-based resources including counselling,
therapy, and intensive services to children and youth and their families. To date, the We Play
for Tyler fundraiser has donated $31 213.00. In 2021, my family and Maltby Centre
collaborated to establish a memorial fund in Tyler’s name to provide the financial resources to support the Centre’s clients in sport and fitness participation. In its first year, this initiative had a very strong uptake. The Tyler Lambert Fund provided financial support to 46 children and youth in their choice of sport/fitness activities.
