Maria's Closet, a non-profit organization providing empowerment, mentorship and prom dresses to those in need. We service young female candidates within the Los Angeles area who have a severe financial need. Most of our candidates come from backgrounds that include domestic violence, homelessness, working poor/single parent environments, and fire victims. They are recommended to us through their school counselors, ministers, or a Boys & Girls club type environment. They fill out an application to be a part our of Big Give event including an essay of need, all of the female candidates work hard at their academic studies despite their circumstances and generally maintain a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Once a year we provide a Big Give event. The day includes a personal stylist (all volunteer) who take each candidate every step of the way to include selecting a prom dress, to selecting a clutch/evening bag, a bracelet, earrings, and then into make-up consulting and any alterations on site. The entire day is free. We bring in empowerment speakers, last year was Vera Jimenez of KTLA news. Our goal is to empower young women and let them know that they are not alone and there is a village of other women supporting them in one of the biggest transitional times of their lives. We understand that Prom represents the last senior dance with friends and from Prom comes graduation and life changes. We want our girls to feel empowered to take these steps and feel beautiful from the inside out as they begin their journey into adulthood. At the end of the Big Give, the girls have a photo op at the step and repeat with their beautiful gown and accessories and they are handed a swag bag of new cosmetics to complete their prom look. Last year through the help of the community, like companies such as yours, we were able to dress 175 girls in need and this year our need is increasing to 250. Our question to you is, if you would be willing to open your heart and consider donating for our upcoming silent auction at our fundraiser. All proceeds from the auctions goes directly to the girls in need. Ensuring that they have all of the items they need to attend their prom. This year, we will include an educational scholarship to help a female in need further her higher-education goals after graduatio. For this coming Prom season, our Big Give is scheduled for March 22, 2020. Our fundraising event is February 22, 2020.
