The Maurer Foundation is the only organization dedicated solely to prevention and early detection of breast cancer.  Since 1995, we have educated a quarter million individuals about how to reduce their risk for the disease and to detect it in its earliest and most treatable stages.

Recent studies show that around 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.  If detected in its early stages, the 5-year survival rate is 98%. However, if it’s caught in the later stages, this number reduces drastically to 24%. These eye-opening numbers demonstrate the importance of our life-saving message of combating breast cancer through early detection and risk reduction.

Our breast health programs are presented to high schools, colleges, community organizations, and businesses throughout Long Island and offer practical information about how to actively improve your breast health.  From demonstrating the proper technique for breast self examination to describing how lifestyle choices like diet and exercise affect your risk.  We present real-life tools women can use to improve their odds against breast cancer.

Our founder, breast surgeon and breast cancer specialist, Dr. Virginia Maurer recognized the need for women to be better informed about the role they play in their own breast health and began offering lessons to her patients and their families.  The success of these workshops led her to reach out to the surrounding community, particularly through local high schools with the belief that the choices young women make today can wield a tremendous influence over their lifelong breast health.
As more young women are empowered and educated through our programs, we hope the result will be a lasting impact of lower cancer rates and higher recovery for generations to come.
