The Melissa Pierce Project (MPP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential multi-generational programs and service to the Joppa (Joppee) community. Joppa is one of Dallas' most intact Freedman's settlements founded by emancipated slaves in 1872. The neighborhood has a rich history, cultural identity and a long lineage of community activism; but similar to many Black communities, Joppa suffers from a lack of access to social services and resources.
To address this unmet need, MPP is developing the first and only physical space for community expression and support in Joppa-Joppee. When compete, the locally owned and operated center will be a true reflection of the community and will serve as a foundation to empower Joppa families, ensuring that the community remains a thriving center of opportunity.
