At Montessori Schoolhouse of Cheshire County we:

*Provide a safe, nurturing and peaceful environment for young children of all abilities and backgrounds;

*Work in partnership with parents to explore the potential of each child;

*Encourage the growth of developmental skills, curiosity, independence and respect for all;

*Use the principles of Maria Montessori to help children discover the joy and beauty of learning.

The Montessori method is inherently inclusive of all populations.  The Schoolhouse presently serves families with children from age 16 months to six years old.  Children of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome.

The Montessori method focuses on a prepared environment with child-size furniture and materials. Children learn at their own pace and learn to take care of their classroom.  They work both independently and in groups.  Teachers strive to nurture each child's natural desire for respect, understanding and knowledge. According to www.education.com, in an article written by the editor of Public School Review, entitled “10 Benefits of a Montessori Preschool,” one benefit is the Montessori method focuses on cooperative play.  Children are encouraged to share and work cooperatively with each other, so children learn to respect each other and build a sense of community.

Another benefit cited is that children learn self-discipline.  With guidance from teachers, students choose what activities to work on and for how long, with students working individually and in pairs.  Teachers don’t run classrooms in the traditional sense with all students doing the same thing at the same time.  This helps develop concentration, self-control, motivation and self-discipline.
