It is the mission of the Mountain Empire Children's Choral Academy (MECCA) to enrich the lives of youth in the region through a program of vocal music education and through the study and performance of the world's great choral literature. MECCA is the only organization offering professionally trained choral experiences for students in grades one through twelve in Northeast Tennessee through the Explorers, Children's Choirs, Da Capo, and Highlands Youth Ensemble programs. Our goals are 1) to give vocally talented children and youth an unforgettable, exemplary choral experience; 2) to implant a solid foundation in music and proper singing techniques; 3) to supply an experience in non-competitive team behavior that calls for the best in each of them; 4) to promote musical leadership by these children for schools, churches, and other organizations in our area; 5) to enhance the Mountain Empire's appreciation of children's fine choral literature; and 6) to encourage young people to continue lifelong participation in the arts. The program is intergenerational and exposes children in Appalachia to various artists and music forms.
Annually, MECCA choirs perform all over the region through a season of holiday and spring concerts, as well as in partnership with organizations like Symphony of the Mountains, Johnson City Symphony, Milligan University, Barter Theatre, East Tennessee State University, King University, Emory & Henry College, Biltmore, and many others.
