NAMI North Texas is a grassroots organization that provides education, support, advocacy, and public awareness to improve the lives of people living with mental health conditions, and their family members. Our service area consists of Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Rockwall Counties and noo service is limited to one demogrraphic in any of these counties.  Many people who request our services or participate inn our programs are mostly low-income individuals or families and, in many cases,, are uninsured.  Almost 20% of calls to our helpline are from Spanish speaking individuals who do not know how to navigate the healtcare system and need immediate assistance because they or someone the love are in crisis.

It is the privilege of NAMI North Texas to serve four of the counties in North Texas.  But more than that, it is our honor to serve and reach the vast, diverse populations that reside in these counties.  In a 2021 survey conducted by NAMI North Texas, we were able to gauge the demographics of those we serve and those in North Texas, based on the over 1,700 people who took part in it.  While the individuals surveyed are not wholly representative of the North Texas population, it was able to show valuable datta.  From this data, we found that 44% of the individuals we are serving are individuals of racial or ethnic minorities.  According to recent evidence, this is key as minority populations are less likely to seek out mental health services.  Yet, our minority individuals served is with 10% of the total minority population in North Texas.  Also breaking norms is the percentage of men we support, as men are exponentially less likely to seek out and participate in mental health services, yet 56% of those served were men.

NAMI North Texas provides mental health education classes, support groups, and resources to persons experiencing mental health conditions, and their family members, to help mitigate the stressors upon individuals and families.  Education classes include: the 6-week long NAMI Basics, developed specifically for parents and other familly caregivers of children and adolescents; the 8-week Peer-to-Peer recovery education course; the 8-week Family-to-Family course taught by families for families of persons living with mental illness (also offered in Spanish); Ending the Silence, an interactive program for middle and high school students, educators, and families; the 8-hour course Mental Health First Aid; the Overwatch Peer Support (OPS) program for first responders; and the 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team training for locall law enforcement agencies.
