The Newton Volunteer First Aid and Rescue Squad is a sixty-member all-volunteer agency founded in whose mission is “to provide an innovative, community-focused approach to superior prehospital healthcare.” To fulfill its mission, the squad provides the vital service of 911-EMS at the Basic Life Support level and community healthcare education programs to the employees, residents, and visitors of the Town of Newton, Sussex County and surrounding communities – a population approaching 150,000.

Since its founding, the squad has grown to become Sussex County’s busiest, fastest, and most progressive EMS service, responding to over 2,000 annual emergency calls with an average response time of 4.2 minutes. The squad’s performance was nationally recognized upon being named as the New Jersey EMS Agency of the Year at the 2018 National Conference on EMS.

Since its inception, the squad has developed a number of vital functions for the community with a dual role of a basic life support Emergency Medical Services agency and the only current provider of free community CPR education in Sussex County. In addition to CPR courses, the squad also offers a variety of health education programs, organizes community food drives, hosts quarterly blood drives, and performs car seat safety inspections and installations.

The agency is led by an Executive Director who directly oversees an Administrative Manager and Operations Manager and whose role is to oversee all aspect of the agency’s function including community outreach, education, financial administration, fleet management, development, human resources, medical operations, regulatory compliance, supply chain, and quality improvement.
