Oasis Haiti was created in June 2016 with the construction of a home able to host up to 15 abandoned children. After 3 months of construction, we finally welcomed our first 8 kids on August 6, 2016 in our Oasis Home for Kids. It was exciting but very sobering as well. Most of our kids were sick when they arrived (parasites in their digestive system, skin disease, etc.) and were unschooled. Even if they are brilliant at 12 years old, they were unable to read or write.
It’s the sad reality of Haiti, the poorest country in our hemisphere with a 70% unemployment rate with 100,000 orphans and 300,000 restavek. The country is facing a serious humanitarian crisis. This is the reason why we decided to get involved there. Everything was doing well when we saw our first kids having the chance to start school in September, filled with hope for their future, while benefiting from a tutor with intensive help to catch-up with their reading and writing skills. After just a few weeks they were doing much better physically and they were so joyful in having a new home, a new family.
