Open Books is a literacy non-profit bookstore founded and based in Chicago. The first store opened in 2006 and the original concept was to repurpose donated books to sell and fund reading and writing programs throughout the city. Since then, we have expanded to three different bookstore locations and serve thousands of children and families each year through our reading and book access programs.

Our children's literacy programming ranges from Early Childhood Residencies to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library facilitation and our one-on-one Reading Buddies programs. In recent years, we have focussed most of our efforts to support our North Lawndale Reads initiative and the surrounding communities in the South and West Sides of Chicago. The organization is now continually reshaping itself to better fit the greatest needs of Chicago's underserved youth.
