OpSPOT (Operation Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) is a well-respected nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the unnecessary euthanasia of dogs and cats by providing free or low-cost spay/neuter/vaccine programs for owned dogs and cats along with community (feral) cats. We are working hard to rebrand the concept of "unnecessary euthanasia" to "necessary sterilization." We also support responsible pet guardianship by encouraging microchipping, annual vaccinations and other services to prevent spreadable, even zoonotic, diseases.
We have several programs, one of which is our long-standing mobile spay/neuter unit, the Waggin'. It has been making its way around St. Louis and the Metro East for countless years in neighborhoods with limited resources and income by providing spay/neuter/vaccine services. We have developed strong working relationships with several area non-profit community partners. Our partners provide a working site for the Waggin' and coordinate the patient surgery list. Synergistically we are combatting the pet overpopulation crisis-one animal at a time.
We also boast our TenSPOTFix Program. Twice a year we partner with veterinary clinics throughout Missouri and Illinois where individuals bring their pets to partnering clinics. The client pays a small copayment, the veterinary hospital reduces their regular surgery rate and OpSPOT subsidizes the remaining portion. Together-the client, Operation SPOT and the veterinary hospital achieve to provide very affordable and accessible spay/neuter services to pet owners who otherwise may not fix their pets. Expanding our reach, creating and maintaining a cohesive relationship with our veterinary community is vital.
Purina has been a longtime supporter of OpSPOT and annually we co-host a vaccine/wellness clinic called Responsible Pet Ownership Day to provide deeply discounted preventative services. We are extremely grateful for this partnership and understand that healthy pets equal happy people.
