Playhouse values early childhood as an exciting and important time in a child’s life. Young children need to explore and experiment freely by themselves and with the world around them. At Playhouse, meaningful learning happens through hands-on experiences. Sensitivity and respect for differences are integral parts of our teaching. Problem-solving and social skills are developed to foster independent thinking. Our staff provides guidance in a nurturing environment. Established in 1951 as a cooperative school, we are enriched by the contributions of our diverse group of families.

As a cooperative school, we believe that all parents should have an opportunity to participate in their child’s education. Home and school become one cohesive world when children, parents, and teachers work collaboratively at creating a community of learners. Open communication between parents and teachers is cultivated through daily contact and scheduled conferences. A newsletter written by each teacher offers parents a window into their child’s experience in the classroom.

Playhouse offers many opportunities for parents to participate. Whether it’s by volunteering in the classroom, joining our parent board of directors or working on a committee, the contributions of our families enrich the entire school community.

Playhouse was founded with a deep commitment to diversity. We strive for a kind of global peace in a world of discord through creating a diverse community where the child’s self-concept is strong. Participating in this type of community sows the seeds for compassion, acceptance, and understanding of others. The roots of peace and the acknowledgment of others begin with the first experiences of a young child. These experiences influence a child’s future beliefs about social justice.
