Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF) is a nonprofit organization that preserves affordable homeownership and promotes safe housing by responding to the repair needs of income-qualified homeowners in San Francisco. Established in 1989 through a grassroots collaborative response to the Loma Prieta earthquake, the mission of RTSF is to repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives.

Over the past 34 years RTSF has established its reputation as a reliable and committed community partner, providing free repair services for over 4,000 low-income households and 380 community facilities with the help of over 40,000 volunteers. The work of our organization builds community resiliency and economic stability for neighbors at risk of displacement, preserves affordable housing, and increases the safety and mobility of low-income seniors and neighbors with disabilities.

RTSF is the primary provider of free home repairs in San Francisco to those who are physically or financially unable to maintain their homes and supports close to 300 households per year. Many low-income residents live in homes that are in disrepair, which can lead to various health and safety issues, including mold, water damage, electrical hazards, and more. Free home repairs help to address these issues, making homes safer and more livable. Safe and Healthy Housing is the foundation of our home repair work, targeting significant safety and health hazards based on the Eight Principles of Healthy Homes— keep it dry, clean, pest-free, safe, contaminant-free, well-ventilated, maintained and thermally controlled. Our Safe at Home program provides each client with a Home Safety Assessment and repairs that reduce the risk of falls and fires in the home: installing grab bars, raised toilet seats, bath benches, smoke and CO detectors, and more extensive work installing stairlifts, plumbing and electrical repairs, roofing, accessibility, HVAC systems, and upgrades to hot water tanks and furnaces that are essential to keeping low income seniors safe and comfortable in their homes.
