Dear Friends, Sponsors, Donors, and Supporters,

We are so excited to announce that the 10th Annual Richmond Mom Prom is going to be here before we know it! This years event is being held Saturday, March 7th 2020 @ 7:00pm in the stunning ballroom at Altria Theater! We are so proud to be benefiting Project: Just Like you, a non-profit founded by a Midlothian mother and serving our special needs community. Being that we always have donated to large, established foundations aiding pediatrics, we’re thrilled to make such a huge difference by benefitting a small, local non-profit. We’ve never had such a massive impact on our community which literally makes us feel over the moon!

Project: Just Like You will provide grants towards applied behavioral therapy (ABA) as a pilot program for individuals in the Commonwealth who do not have access. ABA therapy is not mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia for private insurance plans (for employers with fewer than 50 employees) or those who selected an insurance plan from the limited options available from the Healthcare Marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act in 2015. Yet, ABA is the gold standard of effective therapy, according to the US Surgeon General, David Satcher, MD, PhD, especially for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Specially, Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General states, “Thirty years of research demonstrated the efficacy of applied behavioral methods in reducing inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning, and appropriate social behavior.” Behavioral therapy is used to support decreasing problem behaviors and increase communication, social, and adaptive living skills, regardless of the diagnosis.

As it is in the Commonwealth of Virginia right now, schools do not offer ABA therapy and therefore many children who really need it are not getting this particular therapy.

Behavioral therapy is used to support decreasing problem behaviors and increase communication, social, and adaptive living skills, regardless of the diagnosis. These therapists will work in groups to maximize the cost of therapy for each individual.

Our goal is to connect families with therapists and reduce or remove financial barriers from getting this valuable care. A second major goal is to collect data from participants and present case studies to Virginia’s lawmakers in efforts to help change the laws in the Commonwealth.

This program stems from Project: Just Like You’s founder Molly Korte’s own experiences, where she recently explained to Virginia lawmakers that “we are a family in the Commonwealth that has been left behind.” No family should ever be left behind due to their choice of work and form of insurance. Korte believes if we invest resources in our children, we give them the best advantage to become productive adults who are able to give back to their communities and workplaces. They can have a fighting chance to become independent adults who do not have to spend their entire life in a state-run group home. This has the additional benefit of saving significant tax revenue by spending on prevention instead of a lifetime of an inadequate “cure.”

Molly is passionate about individuals with disabilities overcoming their challenges and believes every single human being is worthy of respect and dignity. It’s why she began the nonprofit Project: Just Like You. She wants all individuals to have a voice, because we all have a story to share.

The Richmond Mom Prom is in its 10th year and between this location and our other event in Hampton Roads, we’ve raised over $300,00 for Virginia children! We’re looking forward to creating a legacy in Richmond, and need community support to do so. Any donations of goods or services are so gratefully appreciated and will make our auction a huge success! We can’t wait to share how much we raise thanks to this gracious community after the event. We thank you so much in advance for your participation in making this an incredible night! This is near and dear to our hearts, and we couldn’t do it without community support from people like you. We will be putting together “swag bags” for our first 150 guests. We’d love any promotional material that’ll help your business to stuff in these giveaways! Thanks again.

Sincerely,
