We are writing to you on behalf of Riker Hill Elementary School in Livingston, NJ, a diverse suburb roughly 35 miles from New York City. Our school mascot is Cornelius the Ram, and we refer to ourselves as a “Ramily”. Our monthly Ramily Gatherings have as much energy as a college tailgate, and our Principal, teachers and Home-Student Association (“HSA”) promote a daily love of learning.
Like many of our surrounding towns, we have experienced an explosive population growth in the months following the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, making sure that we have adequate outdoor facilities is not just a priority – it’s a necessity. For the past several years, upgrading our playground equipment for our students has been the HSA’s chief fundraising goal. A safe playground provides so many benefits to a community. It allows all students a safe space to develop the physical, social, emotional and imaginative skills necessary for the self-confidence, coordination and critical thinking they’ll need as adults. But beyond that – in the darkest days of the pandemic, our outdoor spaces felt like the few places where our children could have some degree of normalcy with their friends.
It is the time of year when the Riker Hill HSA renews our commitment to our students to build them the playground they deserve. While our annual HSA event could not happen in 2020 or 2021, we are thrilled to share that our May 2022 event raised over $8,000 to build a new playground – but our job is nowhere near complete. As part of our fundraising initiative, we seek to partner with your organization for an item to be raffled as one of our “Premier” baskets of exclusive prizes. Such items have previously included tickets to Hamilton, tickets to Stephen Colbert, EF Collection jewelry, among others.
