The Crisis Response program provides critically needed assistance for survivors after experiencing the trauma of sexual assault and abuse. Our trauma-informed services build resilience by treating the root causes of the potentially chronic impacts of abuse and through the needed wraparound care coordination to ensure all of their needs are met. Our specialized, research-based services de-escalate crises, enhance coping skills, increase self-esteem, reduce self-blame, expand support networks, meet basic needs and overcome barriers to help survivors return to their previous level of functioning. Staff and volunteers use a strengths-based service delivery approach that emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety and that creates opportunities for survivors to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. It includes the anticipation and avoidance of institutional processes and individual practices that are likely to retraumatize individuals and upholds the importance of survivor-led development, delivery and evaluation of services. Trauma-informed services are guided by survivors exploring the impact of the trauma, their strengths and creative adaptations to manage trauma history, their resilience and the relationships among trauma, substance use and psychological symptoms. These methods take into account the unique impacts of sexual assault/abuse, which include both realms of PTSD symptoms – interpersonal loss concepts and fear-conditioning symptoms. Our interventions are designed to address both sets of symptoms to achieve lasting change for survivors to reclaim their lives.
