Established by Pope Pius IX in 1853, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland serves the entire state of Maine and is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Boston. With a Catholic population of over 290,000, the diocese is organized into 30 complex, administrative clusters comprised of 55 parishes with 141 churches. Bishop Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D., was installed as the 12th Bishop of the diocese on February 14, 2014. The Diocese of Portland has a storied history of faith-filled priests and lay people serving Maine’s Catholic community and beyond, meeting the challenges it faces while embracing the hope of progress for the local Church. Sixty active diocesan priests and a staff of 464 full-time employees and 634 part-time employees deliver sacramental ministry, pastoral care, lifelong catechesis, social outreach (Catholic Charities Maine) and other services to Maine Catholics as well as to the community-at-large. The diocese also operates 10 Catholic schools, six affordable housing centers for seniors, a nursing home, and other programs.
