Founded in Chicago in 2003, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) began out of a desire to help marginalized families and children before abuse or neglect occurs by combatting the social isolation indicative of potential negative outcomes, circumstances, and inequities. The Safe Families model takes a preventative approach that addresses the needs of primarily low-income, under-resourced, single-mother families in crisis. The crisis families are most often facing when reaching out to Safe Families are homelessness, unemployment, need for hospitalization, or escaping domestic violence, mental health concerns, and those seeking substance abuse treatment.
Safe Families is an evidence-based, community-driven nonprofit decreasing the number of children entering foster care by providing a circle of support and creating an opportunity for families to stabilize and overcome life's challenges by helping to develop resilience, overcome obstacles, and multiply their successes in all areas of life. Our goals are to prevent child abuse and neglect, reduce the number of children entering the child welfare system, and support and stabilize families.
