San Antonio Founder Lions Club

The Oldest Lions Club in the World

The Lions are the World’s Largest Service Organization with over 1.4 million in membership in over 194 countries and geographical areas. The slogan of the Lions is: Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety, and was officially adopted at the 1919 convention. The Lion was chosen as the emblem for this organization because the Lion symbolized courage, strength, fidelity, and vital action. The emblem shows the Lions head facing in two directions. One head is looking to our past and the other is looking to the future. This emblem was adopted at a Board Meeting in 1920.

Why A Lions Club? As a united group, many things can be done that would be impossible for any one person to accomplish alone. There are no barriers in Lionism as to creed, religion or country, or national origin. There is a place for every person in a Lions Program. Each member is another pair of hands that can offer help and love to those in need.

The advantages of membership in a Lions Club are many. First of all, a person has a chance to express their concern for human needs through structured and productive service activities which benefit their community, state, and around the world. As a participant in an international program, the opportunity is provided for cultural exchange, international friendships, and understanding. The enjoyment of club membership and the friendships that arise from participating in fund raising and community service projects are unlimited.

The Number One Mission of the Founder Lions Club is eyes care. On June 25, 1925, during the 1925 Lions International Convention held in Cedar Point, Ohio, Helen Keller challenged Lions everywhere to become Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness. Since that time, the Founder Lions Club has strived to provide eye exams and/or glasses to those in need.

Some of the funds raised for charity endeavors come from the sales of Fiesta Parade chair seats and the telescopes at the Tower of the Americas. Funds earned through these endeavors are given to the various charities of the Founder Lions Club, some of which include: providing eye exams and/or glasses for the needy children and adults in and around San Antonio, the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind, San Antonio Jets Beep Baseball team for the blind, Texas Lions Camp, Leader Dog Program, Guide Dogs of Texas, Cycle for Life and other medical requests received throughout the year.

The motto of Lions worldwide is “We Serve.”
