About Us, United Way Durham Region, Charity, Not for profit Community Building
Mission Statement:
To Improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action.
Values:
Building a Stronger Community…Together!
There can be no doubt that the past two or three years have been turbulent and uncertain ones for all of us.
A financial crisis created elsewhere has had deep and profound impacts on communities all around the globe, and we in Durham have certainly felt the impact. It is precisely in times such as these that the role of the United Way, and the support of a generous community, are critically important.
This United Way was created in the throws of the second world war by a civic leadership which recognized the importance of helping people in need in turbulent and stressful times. In so doing they knew then, as we do now, that when you help those least advantaged and in greatest need you build a stronger and better community which benefits everyone. This lesson of history is a crucial reminder for us now.
The role of the United Way is to help give structure to a cohesive and coordinated community wide effort which will not only help immediately and efficiently, but do so in the most coherent and effective fashion possible. “Every cent well spent” is a phrase which is deeply embedded in our culture. Agency and program reviews help to ensure our donors that their charitable generosity gets to the people who need it most.
We are proud to be the custodians of this proud legacy of sharing and caring, and we are grateful to the many hundreds of campaign volunteers who make it possible, and the many thousands of donors all across this region who demonstrate by their actions the finest elements of community.
