Solutions for Change believes the critical issue of our time is family homelessness. Our founders started to see this problem in the late 1990s, noticing children and families beginning to show up at the winter shelters which had, up until that point, largely housed homeless men. They realized the limited services available to house and rehabilitate this special population and began putting together a plan to grow an intervention of their own.
What they came up with was Solutions for Change - a unique model that blends affordable housing, educational opportunities, employment training and health-related solutions. The mission of Solutions for Change, Inc. is to solve family homelessness – one family, one community at a time. With this goal, Solutions has pioneered an innovative and sustainable solution for homeless families in our community – an effort that has led more than 900 families and 2,800 children out of homelessness since 1999.
Solutions for Change offers a unique model that blends affordable housing, educational opportunities, employment training and health-related solutions. The model is built on three pillars—Solutions University, Solutions Farms, and Solutions in the Community. Solutions University evaluates each family’s needs, then addresses them through an individualized case plan directed at breaking down the causal factors of homelessness. Meanwhile, Solutions Farms combines employment training with entrepreneurial efforts. In addition to supplying local school districts, Solutions Farms provides residents with real-world job experience and serves as a source of revenue for the organization. Finally, Solutions in the Community is an intentional means to re-connect resident families to the community. Through opportunities of service and engagement, families develop connections and relationships that provide a sense of belonging.
Solutions has established itself as a resource for the San Diego community, bringing over eighteen years of experience to serving this unique population to solve the causative factors of our region’s most impoverished residents. Solutions for Change is committed to helping disadvantaged, underserved populations break the cycle of poverty. Our programs emphasize personal growth, bring families back together, and help individuals learn how to give back to their community as neighbors, employees, and volunteers.
