Soroptimist was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California, by 80 women. The organization has grown to approximately 75,000 members in 123 countries. Soroptimist clubs are organized into districts and regions and belong to one of four federations.

The name Soroptimist is coined from two Latin words - "Soror" (sister) and "Optomus" (the best), translated to mean "the best for women."

Soroptimist is a global women’s organization whose members work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Soroptimist programs focus on providing women and girls with access to education, which is one of the most effective ways to end social problems disproportionately affecting women and girls.

Soroptimist International of Antioch was chartered on May 2, 1953. It is a part of Founder Region within Soroptimist International of the Americas federation.
