The members of Soroptimist International of Davis are part of a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. This year, we celebrate 67 years of community service, and support of women and girls in Davis.
As Soroptimists, our signature programs are Live Your Dream and Dream It, Be It. In 2021 we awarded six Live Your Dream grants to female heads of household working to complete their undergraduate or technical education. These cash grants are not scholarships. A grantee may use the funds to pay for books or tuition, but our program also gives women the power to choose how to use financial resources to achieve their dreams. Many of our winners stay in Davis, contributing their skills and gifts to our community.
Our Dream It, Be It program is a monthly mentorship and career readiness program at our local continuation high school, Martin Luther King Jr. High School. We teach life and career skills and provide opportunities for students to meet local business owners, ask questions and explore fields of interest. And each year, we award King and other Davis seniors with scholarships, recognizing these young women as outstanding students and community leaders who share our mission.
In addition, we offer assistance to women in our community who are escaping domestic violence or human trafficking by providing clothing and toiletry items.
