Founded in 1983, LISD Special Olympics, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is one of the largest delegations in Texas. Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children/adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other SO athletes, and the community.

LISD Special Olympics serves athletes from several communities around the Lewisville Independent School District: Lewisville, Highland Village, Flower Mound, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, The Colony, and parts of Carrollton, Plano, Frisco, Hebron, Coppell, Grapevine, and Argyle. Our budget of approximately $58,000 is used for uniforms and equipment (approximately $8K), lodging (approximately $30K) and meals (approximately $20K) necessary for participation at local, area, and state tournament, as well as national and international games for one year. Each year our golf tournament brings in around $45,000, so we fundraise to supplement the remaining funds needed. While many delegations simply charge each family for their share of the costs of uniforms, lodging, meals, etc., we have many of our athletes who live in group homes and/or have limited income, so we fundraise so all athletes are accommodated equally with little or no financial burden on the family and/or athlete.
